This is why we wear the wedding ring on the 4th finger

When we see a person wearing a ring on left hand’s fourth finger, we assume that person to be married. Wearing a ring on the ring finger has long been observed as a definite symbol of marriage in many countries throughout the world. While this is so common a practice the reason behind this custom was never fully explored. Why did we decide and start placing the wedding rings on the left hand fourth finger in the first place??

To answer to this that question is not so simple. There are several ancient traditions and theories in this regard. One such theory is from China which believed that the bond of marriage was the strongest bond of all. It is probably the most vital bond that a person could share with another. When you put both the palms together you tend to feel the fingers you feel, as if, the fourth fingers (ring fingers) are working as a pivot and whatever way you try, you will not be able to separate them out and move both the fingers independently.

So far as the people in the West the Romans are concerned, they have their own theories on this subject. They strongly advocate that the left hand’s fourth finger is having a special vein in it which connects directly to the heart. This vein is called vena amoris or the “vein of love” in Latin. Therefore, by wearing the ring on this vein couples are directly connected and keep each other close to their hearts. It is, as if, their hearts connect via the vena amoris.

Whatever way you think about it, they all decided about the bottom-line that the wedding ring is to be worn on the ring finger only. Despite having different rationales and understanding, the decision is so spontaneous and natural that we all follow it world over!
